Abstract

In this article, the author discusses a counselling process based on the integrated counselling approach on one Muslim couple to help the couple deals with the impact of extramarital affairs. Data was obtained from observation, interview recordings, and session reports. The whole process covered three months, involving four individual counselling with the primary client (husband), three couple counselling sessions, and an individual session with the secondary client (wife), who had also attended separate individual sessions with another counsellor. The main objectives of the intervention plan adopted across the sessions include helping the primary client manage and recover from the impact of infidelity and rebuild a safe space in their marital relationship. The applied intervention framework was guided and adopted from the Infidelity-Specific Treatment Model, introduced by Baucom, Gordon, Snyder, Atkins, and Christensen (2006). In addition, some techniques and approaches prescribed by Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Islamic perspective were also incorporated into the programme content. A positive outcome from the counselling supports the efficacy of this integrated approach in helping the client manage the impact of infidelity and rebuild trust and communication with the spouse.
