Abstract

Public understanding of sexual harassment is crucial in ensuring society, particularly women, know the existing legislation system in protecting them and its impact on societal lives. This study aims to examine the extent to which Malaysian aware and responsive towards the sexual harassment issue. A quantitative survey, which utilized the convenience sampling technique, and a structured questionnaire consisting of questions about the understanding, experiences, and recommendations on the sexual harassment issue, was distributed to 28,852 respondents. The study found that generally Malaysians understand that sexual harassment is immoral physical behavior, and it also includes harassment via social media. The study also found that more than 60 percent of the respondents had experienced sexual harassment. However, only 10 percent of the respondents are courageous enough to make reports to the authorities. The study recommends a more proactive awareness campaign and legal reinforcement, and more accessible information on reporting options.
