Abstract

Juveniles are the most vulnerable group to various threats that may exist in various forms. Juveniles’ crime started from delinquency social and moral depravity until finally succumbing to criminal behavior. The process of urbanisation also contributed to the increase in the crime rate among juveniles. A deep understanding of the distribution of juvenile crime scene covering geographical, spatial and social interventions are important for the formation of a proper prevention of juvenile crime. The use of GIS technology in the construction of juvenile crime intervention has never been done in Malaysia. Index juvenile crime data supplied by the police which includes statistics from 2010 to 2014 in Peninsular Malaysia. This study focuses on a group of children (under 18 years) and young offenders (18 to 21 years). GIS analysis has resulted in Address of Suspect Distribution Map and Gray Area Map. Cluster analysis was conducted on the suspect’s address data to identify the grey areas of a region where there are a large number of juvenile suspects live. The analysis also showed that all the grey area has the same characteristics and physical infrastructure. In terms of infrastructure noted that facilities such as street lighting, parks, field and a leisure center are less or not provided at all in the region. Physically it is found that the majority of the grey areas are the low-cost housing area which has 1 or 2 rooms, or flats. The combination of GIS technology aspects and social aspects through qualitative research can produce up interventions focused on priority areas, types of crime and juvenile age group.
