Abstract

Public participation is an important aspect of a nation’s social and political development, with youth playing a key role in ensuring its continuity. However, youth participation in public engagement in Malaysia faces various challenges that must be addressed in order to fully realise their potential. This study aims to examine the challenges Malaysian youth face in participating in public processes through a literature review. The study highlights key barriers to effective youth participation in public affairs, including limited political awareness, a lack of interest among younger generations in joining youth organisations, and funding constraints. The findings indicate that despite these challenges, there are also opportunities to encourage youth public participation through more inclusive and capacity-building approaches. This research aims to provide strategic recommendations
to policymakers and relevant organisations for designing more effective initiatives to enhance youth engagement in public participation in Malaysia.
